Chesterfield again stumbled in their efforts to make the League Two play-offs, eventually falling 3-2 in a real rollercoaster clash with Shrewsbury Town.

A Trey Ogunsuyi brace and last-gasp goal from Sam Stubbs ensured Salop marked their visit to the SMH Group Stadium with all three points, that despite both Tom Naylor and Tom Pearce netting for the hosts.

The Spireites were on home soil again having beaten visiting Colchester United 3-0 in midweek, setting up the chance to record back-to-back wins for the first time since December.

Included in that three-game run was a 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture between these two sides and completing this particular double would be a further boost to the promotion hopes of Paul Cook’s side heading into the final 10 games of their league campaign.

And it was they who would strike first just past the half-hour mark, with Naylor steering home Dilan Markanday’s low cross.

But just as it looked like the Blues would head into half time with all going to plan, Ogunsuyi popped up to meet Tom Sang‘s inviting set-piece delivery to square things up in stoppage time.

If that equaliser owed a lot to quality execution of both cross and shot though, the goal that completed the turnaround once played resumed originated largely from a calamity within the home defensive unit.

Goalkeeper Zach Hemming dawdled on the ball when receiving a risky pass back, allowing the Shrews’ young striker to pounce and poke in both his and his side’s second of the afternoon.

Substitute left-back Pearce briefly looked to have arrived to spare his teammates’ blushes, bending home a beautiful free-kick of his own to tie things up again at 2-2.

One last twist still remained though as Shrewsbury repeated their antics from the end of the first 45, with Stubbs rising to meet another Sang delivery to finally settle the contest in the 93rd minute.

That result leaves Chesterfield again outside the top seven, something they’ll hope to have the chance to right as they travel for a big clash with Notts County next Saturday (12:30 kick-off.)
