Jake Charles scored twice to maintain Hebburn Town’s unbeaten start to the season as they secured a 2-1 victory away at Buxton.

It was the visitors who made the brighter start, with Johnny Johnston’s ball from the left almost finding Sisa Tuntulwana, who had launched himself towards it but couldn’t make a connection.

Grandson of former Juventus player John Charles, Jake Charles was the first to apply pressure for Hebburn, forcing Logan Stretch to clear.

Charles would soon make his mark at the other end, opening the scoring after Aiden Heywood’s ball across found the forward. His initial shot was saved, but he followed up with a header to put the visitors 1-0 ahead.

The Bucks responded positively, with Johnston’s dribble inside causing problems for the Hebburn defence before his shot was blocked behind for a corner.

Buxton continued to threaten down the left, with Johnston beating his man and getting the ball across to Tuntulwana. His first shot was blocked before his second effort was saved by Allan. The ball then fell to Kian Scales, whose shot was also blocked before the referee blew for a foul.

Loan signing Josh Pescatore was next to go close, forcing the Hebburn goalkeeper into an outstretched save.

The pressure eventually paid off in the 24th minute as Buxton drew level. Johnston’s corner fell to Tuntulwana, who forced the ball home at the second attempt to make it 1-1.

Hebburn threatened next, with Matty Cornish using quick feet to get into the area before seeing his effort, which was searching for the near post, go wide.

Just before the break, a ball from Elliot Forbes across to Liam Murray forced Stretch into a save behind, but the resulting corner came to nothing.

Charles had the first effort of the second half, but his long-range shot was blocked into the hands of Stretch.

Jordan Broadbent then introduced new signing Guilherme Siqueira for Pescatore, switching Buxton to a back three.

Kieran Burton’s header from a corner was next to challenge the Hebburn defence, but he couldn’t find the target.

The home side thought they had taken the lead in the 59th minute when a flicked header from Burton found Devonport, who headed home. However, his run was just too early and the flag was raised for offside.

Instead, Hebburn regained the lead, with Charles completing his brace. A breakaway involving Murray forced Stretch to come off his line, and although the goalkeeper saved the initial effort, the ball was worked back across to Charles, who headed home to make it 2-1.

Devonport thought he had rescued a point late on when he found the back of the net for Buxton, but for the second time in the game, the goal was ruled out this time for a foul on the goalkeeper.
