Public Invited to Help Shape Future of Buxton Opera House

Residents across Derbyshire are being invited to have their say on the future of one of the region’s most historic arts venues.

An engagement event has been organised to gather public views on the long-term development of Buxton Opera House, which has been at the heart of cultural life in the High Peak for more than a century.

The Grade II* listed theatre first opened its doors in 1903 and underwent a major multi-million pound refurbishment in 2001. It continues to host hundreds of performances and events each year, attracting audiences from across the region and beyond.

Last year, nearly £200,000 in funding was secured to explore the building’s long-term future. The funding will support detailed building surveys and investigate sustainability opportunities to ensure the venue remains viable for generations to come.

A public event will now take place on 12 March at the Pavilion Arts Centre, where residents and interested parties can learn more about the plans, ask questions and share their ideas.

Buxton Opera House is owned by High Peak Borough Council and operated by the High Peak Theatre Trust. In 2025, the project received £174,020 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with an additional £15,000 provided by the council.

Council leader Anthony McKeown said the Opera House remains one of the High Peak’s most recognisable and cherished landmarks.

He said the current work aims not only to safeguard the historic building, but also to ensure it remains fit for purpose and enhanced for the future.

He added that hearing from a wide range of people will be vital in shaping future investment and development plans.
