Chesterfield thrashed at Colchester

Report by North Derbyshire Radio’s Ben Smith

JACK HAT-TRICK INFLICTS PAYNE UPON CHESTERFIELD IN CRUSHING COLCHESTER DEFEAT

Chesterfield left their visit to Colchester United rather stunned, with a Jack Payne hat-trick forming part of a 6-2 thrashing in Saturday’s League Two fixture.

Payne’s treble was supplemented by a Harry Anderson brace and Kyreece Lisbie goal, whilst Liam Mandeville and James Berry provided rare bright points for the Spireites.

Paul Cook’s side travelled down to Essex having recorded their biggest winning margin of the season last time out, dispatching of Newport County 4-1 on home soil.

Their hosts for the afternoon, meanwhile, shipped four goals in their most recent fixture, ultimately going down 4-2 at Fleetwood Town.

That created quite the contrast in moods as these two sides prepared to lock horns, but that momentum would be swung on its head rather abruptly as Colchester ran riot in the first 45.

Not even five minutes were on the clock when Anderson drifted in off the left to poke home Lisbie’s cut-back from the close range.

And on 13 minutes it was two, as

Payne was gifted possession cheaply twice in quick succession, with the latter occasion allowing the Us man to stroke the ball calmly into the bottom corner.

A brief moment of respite would come for the travelling support when Mandeville halved the deficit, continuing his fine run of personal returns since returning to Cook’s starting XI.

From there though the game’s previous pattern resumed, as Lisbie this time squared for Payne to again give his side a two-goal advantage.

He would then go on to secure the match ball before things had even reached their halfway point, with the hat-trick sealing goal coming from the penalty spot.

The gulf between the teams would grow further still once play resumed, with Lisbie adding to some fine creative work by getting himself on the scoresheet.

Substitute Berry briefly looked to have had the final word with a curling effort that almost possessed too much class for a mere consolation.

But even that mercy wouldn’t be granted, as Anderson rounded off the rout he started by following in Samson Tovide’s initial shot.

Chesterfield quickly return to action as they host Burton Albion in the Vertu Trophy on Tuesday night, and they’ll then look to put things right in the league when Salford City visit the SMH Group Stadium on Saturday.
