Chesterfield Hit Crewe for Five in First-Half Goal Fest

Chesterfield produced a stunning attacking display to thrash Crewe Alexandra 5-1 at the SMH Group Stadium, scoring all five goals in a dominant first-half performance.

Josh Koroma, Tom Naylor, Fraser Bryden and Liam Mandeville were on target for the Spireites, while a Josh Stephenson own goal completed a memorable afternoon for Paul Cook’s side.

The visitors, who arrived in North Derbyshire among the early promotion contenders, had no answer to Chesterfield’s intensity as the hosts raced into a five-goal lead before the break.

The Spireites needed just three minutes to open the scoring. Liam Mandeville delivered a low cross from the left, and Koroma arrived to finish from close range. The winger suffered an injury while scoring and was replaced by Dilan Markanday.

Chesterfield doubled their advantage just three minutes later. Fraser Bryden helped the ball into the danger area, allowing captain Tom Naylor to finish from close range and register his first goal since April.

The hosts were playing with confidence and continued to cause problems for Crewe’s defence. Markanday saw an effort strike the crossbar before Chesterfield added a third in the 19th minute.

Mandeville was again the provider, delivering a diagonal ball into the box which Bryden met with a well-placed header across goalkeeper Tom Booth and into the net.

Crewe struggled to contain the Spireites, and their afternoon worsened in the 35th minute. Markanday drove into the penalty area and sent a low ball across goal, with Stephenson inadvertently turning it into his own net.

Chesterfield were not finished. In first-half stoppage time, Mandeville sent a cross in from the left which floated over Booth and into the net to make it 5-0.

It capped a remarkable opening 45 minutes in which the Spireites took full advantage of their attacking opportunities and gave the home supporters plenty to celebrate.

Crewe managed to pull a goal back in the 57th minute when substitute Charlie McNeill found space inside the area and fired home.

The visitors improved after the break, but Chesterfield had already done the damage. The Spireites remained organised as they saw out the remainder of the contest to secure an emphatic victory.

The result was a welcome response from Cook’s side, who had been looking to turn their attacking promise into a more ruthless performance. Against Crewe, they did exactly that, producing five goals in a devastating first-half spell.
