National League North Report: Buxton battle in storm to beat Chorley

Buxton battled through brutal wind and heavy rain to earn a 3–2 win away at Chorley.

Logan Stretch was called into action early, holding a routine effort from Sam Fielding in the sixth minute.

Moments later, the weather played its part again when George Cooper went down needing treatment after his slip, and was forced off and replaced by Ashton Mee.

Despite the disruption, Buxton carved out the first real chance as Kian Scales unleashed a powerful strike that forced a save, with Johnny Johnston flagged offside as he chased the rebound.

Building into the game, The Bucks pieced together neat passing moves even as the rain intensified Tony Weston went close on following this, bending an effort just wide.

At the other end Stretch reacted sharply to claim a dangerous ball that was whipped into the box by Adam Blakeman.

Pressure finally told when Devlan Moses threaded a clever pass into Weston, whose cross held up in the middle of the pitch due to the rain and came perfectly for Tuntulwana to hammer home in the 36th minute.

The lead didn’t last long, though, as Blakeman’s pinpoint delivery found Chorley Mike Calveley at the back post to level the contest with a headed effort.

Regaining their composure, Buxton struck again before the break. Tuntulwana turned provider this time, swinging in a teasing cross that Kieran Burton met with a crisp finish in the six yard box to restore the advantage heading into half-time.

Early in the second half, Stretch was called into action once again when Taylor met a high ball with a firm header, but the keeper sprang across goal to claw it away.

Threat continued to come from set pieces, with Finn Cousin-Dawson flicking on a corner to Moses, whose improvised effort skimmed the top of the bar.

Soon after, Scales split the defence with a precise through ball and Johnston stayed composed as he ran through to slot in for 3-1 just after the hour mark.

Late pressure from Chorley arrived as the conditions worsened again. Burton made a crucial clearance from a dangerous Warren Clarke cross, but Blakeman curled in a superb free-kick on 87 minutes to pull the hosts within one.

Deep into stoppage time, Chorley appealed for a penalty when Anjola Popoola went down, but nothing was given.

Steven Bala then fired narrowly wide, the ball skidding off the wet surface, and Buxton held firm to secure a hard-earned victory in punishing weather.

The Bucks now face Harborough Town on Tuesday night at The Silverlands.
