Derbyshire will be looking for a much-improved performance on Thursday when they travel to face Glamorgan in the Metro Bank One Day Cup.
The Falcons suffered a 59-run defeat to Gloucestershire in their opening game of the competition on Tuesday and currently sit eighth in Group A, only ahead of their next opponents.
In their first game, the Welsh side fell 72 runs short of Hampshire’s first-innings total, despite a spectacular hundred from captain Kiran Carlson.
Thursday’s game, at Neath Cricket Club, will therefore be a competitive encounter with both sides looking for their first win of the tournament.
Last match
Derbyshire kicked off their 50-over campaign with captain Brooke Guest choosing to bowl first at Cheltenham’s College Ground and it turned out to be a costly decision.
Despite a tidy opening spell from debutant Rory Haydon, who returned figures of 1/34 from nine overs, the hosts got off to a quick start with James Bracey hitting four sixes in his 83 off 66 balls.
Number three Ollie Price played a controlled innings to make 103 off 115 and half-centuries from Ben Charlesworth and captain Jack Taylor helped to push the score up to 341/8.
Nick Potts led the way with three wickets for the Falcons but proved expensive in his eight overs, going for 72 runs.
Fellow fast bowler Ben Aitchison took two wickets, whilst Martin Andersson and Matt Montgomery, on debut, took one each.
Faced with a big target, the visitors got off to a poor start with openers Harry Came and Caleb Jewell both falling within the first 11 overs.
Guest hit 86 at just less than a run a ball and was supported by 40s from Montgomery and fellow debutant Amrit Basra before a collapse from 228/4 to 282 all out, as Gloucestershire’s Zaman Akhter took four wickets.
The Falcons came away with a net run rate of -1.180, which sees them slightly ahead of Glamorgan’s -1.440.
Derbyshire team news
Head coach Mickey Arthur will continue to be without the services of Aneurin Donald, Wayne Madsen and Pat Brown while they take part in The Hundred.
Further absences from Tuesday’s game were Zak Chappell (personal reasons), Luis Reece (rested), Anuj Dal, David Lloyd (injured), Alex Thomson (injured), Jack Morley, Harry Moore (injured), Yousaf Bin Naeem and Mitch Wagstaff.
Dal, who Arthur said was unlikely to be fit until the back end of the competition, and Bin Naeem were included in the match squad against Gloucestershire but not selected in the team.
Thomson broke a finger against Leicestershire two weeks ago, so his involvement in the tournament is in doubt, but Reece could return against Glamorgan.
Opposition news
Glamorgan’s 50-over campaign began similarly to the Falcons as they conceded over 300 to Hampshire before failing to chase it down.
Nick Gubbins’ unbeaten century, as well as quickfire contributions from 17-year-old Ben Mayes and Felix Organ, inspired the Rose and Crown to a total of 324/6, with fast bowler Ned Leonard taking three wickets.
The hosts were then 79/4 after 11.1 overs as their top order failed but Carlson’s innings of 135 off 92 balls kept their hopes alive.
However, regular dismissals meant that they fell far short of the target and were all out for 252 in less than 40 overs as Hampshire’s 16-year-old fast bowler Manny Lumsden took three wickets on debut.
With just Dan Douthwaite, Mason Crane and Ben Kellaway playing in The Hundred, Glamorgan have a strong squad and are the reigning champions, having beaten Somerset by 15 runs in last year’s rain-shortened final.
Seamers Timm van der Gugten and Jamie McIlroy are set to miss the fixture through injury and experienced batter Colin Ingram is taking on a coaching role during the tournament.
Previous encounter
The last 50-over meeting between the two sides came in 2023, when Glamorgan chased down 299 with seven wickets left.
Derbyshire’s top-order got off to a strong start as half-centuries from Harry Came, Luis Reece and Haider Ali got them into a strong position at 241/2 in the 41st over, but a middle-order collapse meant they only reached 298/8 in their 50 overs.
The Welsh side then gave the Falcons’ bowlers a tough day as a hundred from Ingram, fifty for Carlson and handy contributions from Thomas Bevan and Billy Root secured victory with 2.9 overs remaining.
Anuj Dal, Nick Potts and Alex Thomson all took a wicket each as Brooke Guest used eight bowlers.
