A Derbyshire Police officer has been removed from frontline duties after a criminal investigation was launched into allegations that artificial intelligence (AI) was used to create evidential material in a number of cases.
The force confirmed that the officer is being investigated on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. No arrests have been made and the inquiry remains in its early stages.
In a statement, Derbyshire Police said it is working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to identify any cases that may have been affected.
A force spokesperson said: “A criminal investigation has been launched into an allegation of perverting the course of justice after the alleged use of AI systems by an officer to create evidential material in a number of cases.
“The force is working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to any potentially impacted cases. However, the investigation is in its early stages, so no further details are available.”
The officer involved has been removed from frontline duties while the investigation continues.
The CPS confirmed it is supporting the investigation and reviewing any cases that could be affected.
A CPS spokesperson said: “We are engaging with defence teams and the courts in appropriate cases.”
They added that it would be inappropriate to comment further while police inquiries are ongoing.
The development comes during a week in which a new national centre dedicated to the use of artificial intelligence in policing, known as PoliceAI, was launched.
Speaking at the launch, interim director Alex Murray said: “Crime and technology are evolving rapidly. Policing must keep pace by adopting AI responsibly to catch criminals and keep people safe.”
Derbyshire Police has not released further details about the alleged use of AI or the number of cases under review.
