National League North Report: Seadogs Stage Second-Half Comeback To Deny Buxton Victory

Scarborough completed a second-half comeback after trailing by two goals in the first half, securing a 2-2 draw against Buxton.

For the second weekend in a row, Buxton scored inside the opening 30 seconds. A ball out to the right was delivered into the area by Tony Weston and found Devlan Moses, whose first-time volley hit the back of the net to give the visitors an early lead.

Buxton continued to cause problems for the Scarborough defence, with Weston almost finding Johnny Johnston with a through ball from around 30 yards out, but it just ran through to the goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, the home side looked to threaten when Dom Tear tried his luck from distance, although his ambitious effort flew high and wide.

Next, a well-worked set-piece routine tested Scarborough. Johnston’s low pass found Weston, whose effort towards the bottom-left corner was blocked by Alex Purver.

Shortly afterwards, Luca Colville attempted an acrobatic effort inside the box, but the ball looped up into the air before being cleared.

On the half-hour mark, Moses did well to retain possession under pressure before releasing Ashton Mee into space, although his shot across goal was comfortably gathered by the goalkeeper.

Six minutes later, Jack Waldron delivered a free-kick which picked out former Buck Jake Hull, whose header was claimed high above his head by Logan Stretch.

Just before the break, Brown’s pass fell kindly to Johnston following his press. He beat his marker for pace, forced a save from the goalkeeper and then fired home the rebound to double Buxton’s advantage.

Only three minutes into the second half, the Seadogs pulled a goal back when Waldron swung a cross into the penalty area and Hull smashed home to halve the deficit.

After that, Scarborough enjoyed a sustained spell of possession, controlling the ball and dictating play without creating any clear-cut opportunities.

Ahead of the hour mark, Jordan Broadbent turned to his bench, handing Ed Devine his debut before introducing Malakai McKenzie in place of Johnston shortly afterwards.

With his first involvement, McKenzie almost picked out Sisa Tuntulwana in the box, but the ball struck the forward’s shoulder.

However, substitute Rio Allan levelled the match from the penalty spot after beating Devine and being brought down by a sliding challenge. Allan stepped up and calmly converted to make it 2-2.

Soon after, McKenzie burst into space on the counter-attack following a move started by Weston, and his powerful effort from distance crashed against the crossbar.

Late on, the home side piled on the pressure from a series of corners, but Buxton stood firm and weathered the storm to earn a share of the points.

The attention for Buxton now turns to the FA Trophy where they face Chorley away from home next weekend.
