Sheffield FC successfully put more pressure on the teams above them in the NCEL Premier Division as they beat Golcar United at the Home of Football Stadium on Saturday afternoon (07/03/2026).
The game promised to be an entertaining encounter from the start, with 2 teams in decent enough form across the last 6 games, although for different reasons the 2 sides find themselves battling at opposite ends of the table. Both sides went into this game with 10 points from the last 6, with the hosts coming out on top with a +5 better goal difference before a ball was kicked.
Both sides went at each other in the expected manner in the opening stages, creating a really exciting prospect for any neutral fans in attendance. Both teams created numerous half chances as they tried to figure each other out in the opening stages, in very entertaining fashion!
After 15 minutes, the deadlock was broken. Golcar’s number 8 Wilkinson cut inside from the right and fired a spectacular effort that cannoned down off the bar. I thought the shot chance had gone as the ball bobbled in front of him but if anything, he used that to his advantage! The linesman judged that the ball had crossed the line to give the visitors the lead (although regardless of this, the number 9 Flynn was on hand to tap home to make sure of a goal).
The visitors only held the lead for 5 minutes though, before Crofts lifted a delightful cross from the right wing towards the back post. The cross found the head of Edwards who managed to head down past the Golcar keeper to level the scores.
The rest of the first half continued in similar fashion before another incident occurred to potentially change the outlook of the game completely as Golcar United were reduced to 10 men. Durham was the offending player as he received 2 yellow cards in as many minutes and thus, his marching orders. No real arguments as they were both unnecessary, reckless challenges.
Half-Time – Sheffield FC 1-1 Golcar United
The visitors refused to let the hosts’ man advantage count however as they came out fighting in the second half, defending well and even trying to find their own opportunities on the counterattack.
10 minutes into the second half however, this all changed as Sheffield FC took the lead. Hardwick successfully beat the offside trap and shot an absolute belter into the top corner to finally make all their pressure count.
Again though, Golcar refused to lie down and take the defeat. In fact, 2 minutes later, they had the ball in the net themselves although the referee had spotted a foul on a Sheffield FC defender and pulled it back for a free kick.
The rest of the second half was very similar. Sheffield with the man advantage had a lot of the ball and created a breadth of chances although the score remained at 2-1. Whether it was good defending from Golcar, or the hosts being wasteful in the final third remains to be seen but nonetheless, Sheffield struggled to find an opening.
In the 90th minute, we thought Golcar’s solid defending had paid dividends has a low shot came in from the edge of the box, evading the Sheffield keeper. Unfortunately for the visitors though, the shot also evaded the far post and led to nothing more than a goal kick.
Eventually though, with pretty much the last kick of the game, Sheffield scored a third to ensure the 3 points stayed at the Home of Football Stadium. It was that man Hardwick who again beat the offside trap (although I will say, this one looked awfully close from where I was standing, the linesman’s flag stayed down) and once again fired a belter into the top corner in a remarkably similar fashion to his first.
Full-Time – Sheffield FC 3-1 Golcar United
Overall, a thoroughly entertaining game and probably a deserved win for the home side, although there are 2 ways to look at this game. On the one hand, they got the win and the 3 points against 10 men which would have been the most important thing before kick-off. However, it could be said that with all their pressure and ball possession, they could have scored more to put some big numbers on their goal difference ahead of the run in, but a win is a win is a win.
Sheffield FC remain in 7th place, 3 points behind the playoff places although they have 4 games in hand on the teams above them.
