New North Derbyshire Leisure Centre will open in June

The opening date of a new leisure centre in Derbyshire has been confirmed.

North East Derbyshire District Council has announced Clay Cross Active will open to the public on 18 June.

The new building, which has replaced the Sharley Park Leisure Centre in Market Street, was originally planned to open last winter, but was delayed due to the administration of previous contractor ISG.

The council’s cabinet member for leisure, Kathy Rouse, said: “The centre has been highly anticipated in the community and they will get to be part of a state-of-the-art facility that brings a unique experience to North East Derbyshire.”

Construction started on the new venue, behind the “tired and dated” Sharley Park Leisure Centre, in March 2023, with the old building being demolished last May.

Following the administration of ISG in November 2024, the council then appointed Universal Civils & Build as the new contractor, which restarted building work in December.

Clay Cross Active is being built as part of the £24m Clay Cross Town Deal, with £1.9m of funding also coming from Sport England.

Once open, the new centre will feature a modern fitness suite, spin studio, sports hall, main pool and a learner pool, with spectator seating, soft play and a community cafe.

Rouse added: “We are as excited as you are to see the build completed, it will be a great addition to Clay Cross and so will the rest of the building works in the town centre via the Clay Cross Town Deal.”
