Refurbished trains have started to be rolled out in the East Midlands as part of a £23m investment.
Some of the Class 170 trains, which run on East Midlands Railway (EMR) local routes, have not been refurbished since 1999.
Upgrades include re-upholstered seating, wi-fi, USB charging and new carpets, as well as signage and CCTV throughout the trains.
One train is already in operation and was launched at an event at Derby railway station on Tuesday.
The previous rolling stock had been acquired from various rail operators so there were lots of different styles and ages.
Andy Sykes, whose Derby-based company provided interior design for the project, said: “We wanted to make it feel less train-like in its colours and patterns.
“They’ve been inspired by what you might find in a hotel or in furniture, while still being able to be cleaned.
“There’s no loud colours or patterns, it’s all quite calm – that’s the idea.”
Philippa Cresswell, EMR customer experiences director, said “It’s quite a stark change from what we had.
“They were in need of a lot of love and attention and they’ve certainly had that.”
She added all 44 trains in the fleet would be taken out of service and renovated over the next 18 months.
The 170 fleet is used on a number of routes including Matlock to Derby and Nottingham, Mansfield to Nottingham via Worksop and Derby to Stoke-on-Trent.
It is also frequently used on the Liverpool to Norwich route.
