New film shows Chesterfield woman’s key role in miners’ strike struggle

A Chesterfield woman who played a key role in keeping the miners’ strike going says it’s high time for a documentary about women’s role in the dispute.
Kate Alvey was a miner’s wife in her late twenties when the miners walked out in 1984, and soon ended up on picket lines, or organising the distribution of food to struggling families across north Derbyshire, as they coped for nearly a year without the income of their main breadwinner.
Kate features in Iron Ladies, a new film about women’s contribution during the period, being shown at Chesterfield Studios’ Rose Theatre, on Friday 28 November at 7pm.
She spoke to North Derbyshire Radio about how the strike had changed her, but began with a quick explanation about why the miners walked out, and what was at stake, forty years ago.
