Jordan Broadbent

Reflecting on the game against Harborough, Broadbent said:

“We have spoken a lot about identity over the last week or two, and I think we lost it maybe a couple of weeks back for one or two games, but I think, in terms of identity, that just epitomises what we are about today.

Running, energy, transitional moments, front-footed duels. So, yeah, I’m really pleased with the performance.

I think we have created enough to probably double that scoreline and put us in a really comfortable position in the second half. I thought we looked a threat all night, and not just one or two players. I thought everyone, from set pieces to the defenders when they were going and attacking the box, posed a threat. But, yeah, we posed a threat in every position tonight, and I was pleased by that element of it.”

Opposition facts – Marine

The club was founded in 1894 by local businessmen and former college students, and takes its name from a hotel.

They have the nicknames The Mariners and The Lillywhites.

Their strongest FA Cup runs came in the 1992-93 and 2020-21 seasons, when they reached the third round of the competition. The first time, they lost 3-1 to Crewe Alexandra, before losing 5-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in 2021.

This season, they beat Hartlepool United to progress to the first round, where they will travel to face Bradford City.

In the FA Trophy, they have reached the semi-final stage three times: in 1983–84, 1991–92 and 2025–26. Most recently, they lost 1-0 to Wealdstone.

They travel to Radcliffe for the second round of the competition in a couple of weeks’ time.

They play at the Marine Travel Arena, which has a capacity of 3,058, of which 519 are seated. They moved to the ground in Crosby in 1903.

The away side are managed by Bobby Grant, who took charge of the club in May 2025 after previously retiring from playing at the club as captain for the 2024-25 season. He also played for National League North side Radcliffe. Most notably, though, he played over 100 times for Fleetwood Town. As a player, he was a versatile, left-footed forward.

Last season, the Mariners finished 12th in the National League North on 62 points.

In the current five-game form guide, they sit fourth, having accumulated ten points.

In their last league game, they lost 2-1 away to Chester. Cole Simms gave the visitors the lead before Sam Foley and Jefferson Abreu turned the scoreline in Chester’s favour to secure the points.

They are 15th in the league, with 16 points from 13 matches.

One to watch – Finlay Sinclair-Smith

A winger who can play on either side, Sinclair-Smith is in his third spell as a Marine player.

The 26-year-old has scored two goals so far this season in 16 appearances.

He scored 18 goals in the NPL Premier Division while playing for Bamber Bridge in the 2022-23 season and finished as one of the season’s top goalscorers. While playing for them, he also picked up the Supporters’ Player and Players’ Player of the Season awards.

The following season, he scored 27 times in 49 appearances, earning his second Young Player of the Season award in the NPL Premier Division.

Last season, he netted 14 times and has now made over 150 appearances for the club.

Head to head

In the last five meetings, Buxton have won three games, with Marine winning two.

Three meetings came last season, the most recent being in January, when Buxton came out 4-0 winners with goals from Zac Gilsenan, Cian Coleman, Tai Sodje and Tate Campbell.
