Jordan Broadbent
Reflecting on the game against Chester, Broadbent said:
“I thought we came out a little bit better in the second half. We made a couple of tactical changes. And I thought defensively we were outstanding. I thought we defended the box really well. And then yeah a solid team performance and another win really happy.”
Opposition Facts
Founded in 1878 as Hurst Football Club, their earliest recorded match dates back to a game against Hurst Red Star a year later.
Ashton United’s best run in the competition came in the second round, a stage they reached twice as Hurst FC. In 1883–84 they beat Turton 3–1, then Irwell Springs 3–2, but a protest saw the FA annul the result. Hurst refused the replay, sending Irwell Springs through.
They repeated the feat by again reaching the second round and defeating Halliwell 3–1. Another protest led to the result being annulled, and Ashton again declined a replay, giving Halliwell a walkover into the third round.
Last season in the FA Cup they were knocked out in the third qualifying round against Runcorn Linnets after beating Hallam in the previous round.
They progressed through to this round with a convincing 5–2 victory over Whitby Town.
The home side are led by former Buxton boss Steve Cunningham and also have former player Kurt Willoughby, Alex Byrne, Tommy Taylor and James Hardy in their squad.
Last season they finished 10th in the NPL Premier Division on 53 points.
So far this season they are in 13th place in the NPL and have picked up 11 points from their nine games.
Most recently they lost 1–0 to top of the league Cleethorpes Town.
One To Watch: James Hardy
Hardy didn’t make many appearances whilst with The Bucks but has since gone on to become a key player for Ashton United over the past couple of seasons.
A tricky winger, Hardy is good on the ball and is versatile, able to play across the forward line.
He has also made five appearances for the England C side and is very experienced in non league.
Whilst with England C in 2019 he won the player of the year award.
At the start of his career he scored eight goals to help AFC Fylde win the National League North title.
Last meeting
The sides last met in pre‑season, where a trialist’s goal proved enough to give The Bucks a 1–0 win.
In the last competitive game they played Buxton picked up a convincing win with goals from Jamie Ward, Dom Tear and Tommy Elliott.
