National League North Preview: Buxton open their season against Hereford

Jordan Broadbent

Reflecting on the final pre-season fixture, Broadbent said:

“I think it’s been relatively good preparation. We’ve had a lot of setbacks along the course of pre-season, naturally.

I thought we looked a little bit like we’d had a setback today for the first 30 minutes of it, but after that, for the remaining 60 minutes, I thought we were okay. We got back into the game, and to end on a win was very good.”

Opposition Facts

Founded in 2014, Hereford were established as a phoenix club following the winding-up of Hereford United.

The Bulls’ nickname comes from the Hereford cattle breed, which originated through selective breeding in the mid-18th century.

Home matches are played at Edgar Street, which has a capacity of 5,250.

The visitors are led by Australian Aaron Downes, who, as a player, most notably represented Chesterfield and Torquay United.

Downes also previously served as caretaker manager of Cheltenham Town and assistant manager of Torquay United before taking on his role at The Bulls earlier this year.

Last season, Hereford finished 20th in the National League North with 52 points, surviving on goal difference.

Hereford United’s highest-ever finish came during the 1976/77 season, when they finished bottom of the Second Division following their promotion to the division the previous season.

Traditionally, Hereford’s home colours are white and black, while their away kit is yellow and their goalkeeper kit is pink.

Harry Tunstin

Harry Tunstin has returned to The Bulls on loan from Cheltenham Town this week.

Tunstin helped Hereford retain their place in the league last season and scored a goal against Radcliffe.

Former Bucks

Former Buxton goalkeeper Theo Richardson is between the sticks for The Bulls and was part of The Bucks’ promotion to the National League North in 2022, as well as two runs to the FA Cup second round.

Since departing Buxton to join AFC Fylde, Richardson was loaned to Hereford before making the move permanent.

Keziah Martin is another former Buck who now finds himself at The Bulls.
