A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was reportedly assaulted in Chesterfield earlier this week.

The incident occurred shortly before 1pm on Tuesday 20 January at a house in Southgate Way, Barrow Hill, after reports of a man having been assaulted.

Jason Smith, of Southgate Way, was found at the address and was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and died on Thursday evening (22 January).

The 53-year-old’s family are aware and are being supported by specialist officers.

A 20-year-old man from Sheffield has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

People in the area will have seen an increased police presence in the area in recent days as enquiries have been carried out and that presence will remain over the weekend.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anyone leaving the Southgate Way area at around 1pm on Tuesday 20 January.

Of particular interest is anyone with CCTV footage from the surrounding streets – as well as any drivers who may have been in the area at the time with dashcam footage.
