In a statement released yesterday (27/12/25) the Gladiators confirmed that Adam Clayton has left the club by mutual consent.
The news comes after a string of poor performances, particularly away from home, topped off by losing 3-0 to Ossett United on Boxing Day.
Matlock find themselves 3rd in the Northern Premier League East Division, 7 points off Redcar Athletic in top spot who have played one fewer game. It is no secret of the club’s desire to win promotion at the first attempt and the recent inconsistencies, coupled with significant squad investment, have contributed to today’s decision.
Adam Clayton was placed in interim charge of the club as player/manager in March 2025 after the departure of Ryan Cresswell and unfortunately, wasn’t able to save the club from relegation. After the season concluded, Clayton was given the job permanently to try and get the club back to step 3 at the first attempt.
During his tenure, he presided over 18 wins, 7 draws and 8 losses, giving a win percentage of 54.5% in what was his first managerial appointment.
In a statement, the club said:
“Adam has worked tirelessly since his appointment to try and put us in a strong position with regard to securing promotion back to step three following our relegation last season. However, too many results have fallen short of the standards expected and it is felt a fresh approach will benefit the club’s immediate and long-term future. Assistant manager Steve Eyre has also left the club. We wish to place on record our thanks to Adam and Steve for their efforts with Matlock Town and wish them nothing but the best in their future endeavours.”
The club have invited applications for first team manager to eb submitted and there are more details on their website.
