Local man makes steps to raise funds for Ashgate Hospice in memory of his wife

An Inkersall man is once again preparing to take part in the 10k Sparkle Night Walk for Ashgate Hospice, in memory of his wife Sue, who was cared for at home by the hospice team.
Peter Jacques will join hundreds of supporters for Chesterfield’s much-loved annual night-time fundraiser. This will be the second time he has taken part in the event, which raises vital funds for hospice care in North Derbyshire.
Sue became unwell in autumn 2024 and was later diagnosed with metastatic cancer. Sadly, she died that same year, after being supported at home by Ashgate’s specialist palliative care nurses. Peter says the care and reassurance they received meant Sue could stay where she wanted to be – at home, surrounded by the people important to her.
“The care we had from Ashgate Hospice meant that Sue’s wish of being at home could happen,” said Peter. “The support was invaluable. We never felt alone and knew they were always only a phone call away. At every visit, Sue was treated with care and compassion, and nothing was ever too much trouble.”
Throughout their life together, Peter and Sue fostered 68 children, opening their home to babies and young people for short breaks and longer stays. Peter says giving back feels like a natural continuation of the life they shared.
Peter first took part in Sparkle Night Walk last year in Sue’s memory. He was joined by some of their family, who are also participating in the walk again this year. He was also joined by colleagues and friends from Inkersall Spencer Academy, where Sue worked for more than 30 years. Dressed in sparkly outfits and pink tutus, the group raised an incredible £5,398.
“Sue would have been so proud of us all,” said Peter. “She’d have been looking down and laughing at us wearing our pink tutus!
“Doing the walk is something I’ll never forget. It’s emotional, but it’s also really special. I’d encourage anyone thinking about signing up to do it. It’s a great way to remember someone important to you, for a fantastic cause.”
Up to 3,500 walkers will come together on Saturday 27 June to take on the 10km walk, setting off from Chesterfield Football Club.
Everyone taking part will help fund Ashgate’s specialist care in people’s homes and communities  across North Derbyshire, the High Peak
and Dales.
Everyone who signs up will receive a fundraising pack, a pink Sparkle T-shirt and flashing bunny ears to wear on the night. Participants can
walk with friends, family or colleagues, and many choose to walk in memory of someone important to them.
Early bird entry is now open for just £15 until 29 March.
As an independent charity, Ashgate receives less than a third of its funding from the NHS, with the rest raised through the generosity of the local community. By taking part in Sparkle Night Walk, supporters help ensure Ashgate can continue to be there for people when it matters most.
Peter added: “I used to think hospice care only happened in the hospice building. I’d tell anyone not to worry about the hospice coming into your home. The care we had meant Sue could be where she wanted to be, surrounded by us. I’ll always be grateful for that.”
