Cabinet members will be asked to give the go-ahead to a public consultation about the future of Glossop Household Waste Recycling Centre at a meeting on Thursday 9 April 2026.
Closing the centre, located on Melandra Road, would save £360,000 a year in running costs.
We operate 9 recycling centres across Derbyshire but Glossop has been earmarked for closure ahead of the others because:
- It collects the lowest volume of waste and recyclables – 3,800 tonnes per year – compared to the other 8 household waste recycling centres. The total amount collected across all sites per year is around 70,000 tonnes.
- It receives the least amount of visits – 65,700 a year compared to more than a million across all 9 sites.
- It needs substantial investment to make sure it continues to comply with safety regulations if it is to remain open.
- Most users visit the site infrequently with around 62% of all vehicles recorded over a 12-month period making just a single visit and a further 25% visiting just 2 or 3 times.
- Just 13% of visits are from vehicles which have been registered to use the site. As users must live in Derbyshire to register, this suggests a significant proportion of users could be traveling to the site from outside the county.
As well as asking for residents’ views on the potential closure of the Glossop site and being redirected to the nearest alternative facility at Buxton, a public consultation would, subject to approval, also ask for views about a range of alternative cost‑saving measures.
Cabinet Member for Net Zero and Environment Councillor Carol Wood said:
“Making sure this council is as efficient as it can be and that every pound of council tax-payers’ money is accounted for and spent wisely is our top priority.
“But we won’t make any decisions about the future of this recycling centre without looking at all of the options and asking local people for their views so that we can make a reasoned and balanced judgement.”
If the public consultation gets the go-ahead, it is anticipated a 12-week consultation would be launched next month.
