South Shields inflicted another defeat on Buxton as they exited the FA Cup at the Third Qualifying round after a 2-0 loss.
Early on, Tony Weston broke away down the right after three minutes and forced Jasper Shiek into a sharp save from a driven cross at the byline.
Moments later, the away side struck in the seventh minute when George Cooper lost possession to Toby Onanaye, who fed Caden Kelly and with time and space, Kelly picked out the top left corner beating Logan Stretch for 1-0.
Seeking a response, Kian Scales threaded a ball down the line to Sisa Tuntulwana, whose cross found Weston. His powerful header, however, was kept out by the Shields goalkeeper as he claimed the ball at the second attempt.
Soon after, Jordan Jones tried his luck from the edge of the area, but his dipping effort was comfortably held by the keeper.
Pressure continued from a Buxton corner, with Kieran Burton heading down into Weston’s path, though his first-time strike drifted narrowly wide of the goal.
Further danger then came from another set piece when Johnny Johnston’s deep free kick found Finn Cousin-Dawson, but his header failed to hit the target.
Continuing the aerial threat, Cooper met a cross with a diving header after bursting into the box, yet he couldn’t trouble the South Shields keeper.
At the start of the second half, Jones delivered a dangerous cross into the area, but Cedwyn Scott couldn’t steer his effort on target.
Johnston then sent in another deep free kick, this time picking out Tuntulwana, whose header was forced behind by a Shields defender.
In the 65th minute, South Shields doubled their advantage. A sharp passing move saw Kelly drive forward and find Scott, who played a first-time pass to Onanaye. He finished calmly into the corner past Stretch for 2-0.
Late on, substitute Owen Devonport held the ball up well before sliding in Johnston, who forced a sharp near-post save from the keeper.
At the other end, South Shields almost added a third when Sam Ashford’s cross found Scott, whose header was pushed away by Logan Stretch.
Finally, the last chance fell to Shields as Clegg drove into the box, skipped past a couple of Buxton defenders, and went to ground, but the penalty appeals were waved away.
Buxton suffer their second successive defeat to South Shields and will be looking to bounce back with a long trip to Kings Lynn away in the league.
