Extra targeted patrols to keep motorcyclists safe on Derbyshire’s roads

Officers will be carrying out extra, targeted patrols across the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales this summer in a bid to keep motorcyclists safe.

We know that thousands of riders flock to the Peak District each year to enjoy the area’s stunning scenery.

However we also see a high number of fatal or serious collisions involving motorcyclists in Derbyshire.

The roads policing team will be out on regular extra targeted patrols on roads across the High Peak and Dales until the end of summer.

With the bank holiday weekend upon us, officers will be out speaking with motorcyclists about how to keep safe and dealing with any dangerous riders that are seen.

Inspector Lee Welsby, who leads our roads policing unit, said: “The High Peak and Derbyshire Dales are among the most popular locations in the UK for bikers and we want them to be able to continue enjoying all the Peak District has to offer.

“However, we want each rider to make it home safely at the end of the day so we are committed to doing all we can to educate them, while also tackling dangerous and illegal activity.

“We will be keeping a watchful eye out for anyone riding in a dangerous or reckless manner, speeding, contravening white lines and just generally putting themselves and other road users at risk.

“Officers will also be looking out for traffic offences such as those people riding without insurance or an MOT, illegal number plates, and modified exhausts.

“Bikers will always be welcome in Derbyshire but we will not tolerate anyone coming to the area intent on criminality or dangerous riding.”

Last month we launched our Own Your Ride campaign, aimed at keeping motorcyclists safe on the county’s roads.

The campaign will run throughout the year, with the intention of upskilling riders through the BikeSafe scheme.

No matter how long you have been riding, taking part in a BikeSafe workshop can help to improve your skills, and give you that vital refresher before you embark on a busy season of riding.
