Report by North Derbyshire Radio’s Ben Smith.
Chesterfield’s inability to string wins together reared its head once again on Tuesday night, with Oldham Athletic consigning them to a 3-0 defeat in their midweek League Two meeting.
Kane Drummond was at the double and Mike Fondop also on target as both returned to the SMH Group Stadium to guide the visitors to a rather routine three points.
The Spireites entered this game fresh off consecutive five-goal thrillers, suffering a late 3-2 loss against Shrewsbury Town in their last home outing before beating 10-man Notts County by the same scoreline on the road.
Entertainment hadn’t been in short supply in recent times then, though what supporters likely wanted to see more of from Paul Cook’s side was consistency, with them still yet to secure back-to-back victories since December.
Indeed it would be Oldham who struck first here, with ex-town player Drummond opening the scoring to haunt his former employer for the second time this season, having also netted in the reverse 1-1 draw between these two teams.
And it would be another name of Chesterfield teams past that would worsen the damage a little under 10 minutes later, with Fondop latching on to a ball over the top before delicately lifting over ‘keeper Zach Hemming and in.
Those goals left the hosts in a pretty deep hole heading into the break, with Cook attempting to fashion a way out by making three alterations to his team during that interval.
But despite a brief uptick in general play a fightback never truly looked likely to materialise; a fact then rubber stamped when Drummond duly slotted home an open goal to notch his second of the night.
Chesterfield will be left particularly stung knowing that result has seen them again slip out of the play-off places, a situation they’ll hope to rectify as they travel to Accrington Stanley on Saturday.
