Buxton play the first of two cup games this week with a match against Derby County B side in the Derbyshire Senior Cup.

The Bucks

Buxton lost 2-1 at the weekend to an inform Merthyr side, with Tate Campbell getting the Bucks’ goal.

Reflecting on the performance, manager John McGrath said:

“It was done in that one moment where Kieran gets sent off. It’s something that I’ve watched back; it happens live in front of me and it’s inexcusable, but that’s the only negative from today.

On the balance of play, I thought we were excellent, especially in the second half. I had players playing for the football club, playing for their shirts, playing for themselves, for me, the management team, everybody. We were in the ascendancy, we were on the front foot, we were really aggressive. I’m just so disappointed that it wasn’t eleven men for the majority of the game.

They’ve won seven games on the bounce and after fifteen minutes we are down to ten men. It kind of kills it a little bit for a while, but just loads of positives. I’m never happy about defeats and I hate losing games of football, they do as a group as well, but afterwards, I just said I was proud of that second half performance.”

Opposition facts

Derby County launched their B side in the summer and they play in the Central League.

Former Stockport County player Keith Briggs is the manager of the newly formed side and has previously been in charge at Stalybridge, New Mills and the Sheffield United academy as well as the assistant manager at Southport.

In their most recent game, they beat Mansfield Town reserves 3-1 at Moor Farm Training Centre.

Various versions of Derby County sides have taken part in the Derbyshire Senior Cup over the years and they have won it three times.

A Derby side last won this competition in the 2010-11 season beating Buxton 5-0.

One to Watch: Cruz Allen

Allen is an 18-year-old attacking midfielder who has come through the youth ranks at Derby County.

He scored a free-kick for Wales U19 in injury time earlier this month as they went on to beat Japan 3-2.

Whilst with The Rams he has featured in the first team squad several times and in 2023 he was linked with Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle.

Last time they faced

Last season in the competition Buxton won 3-1 against Derby County’s academy side with Bobby Faulkner scoring twice and Oliver Ewing grabbing the third late on.
