Derbyshire Residents Invited to Have Their Say on Police Funding Priorities

Police and Crime Commissioner Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts is urging residents across Derbyshire to have their say on policing priorities and funding as she launches her annual budget consultation.

The survey gives local people the opportunity to influence decisions on next year’s policing budget and indicate how much extra they would be prepared to contribute through council tax towards policing services in Derbyshire.

The Commissioner said the consultation comes at a time when policing continues to face significant financial pressures, alongside growing public expectations around crime prevention, community safety and victim support.

Police and Crime Commissioner Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts said: “Residents have been clear about what matters most to them. They want serious violence tackled, anti-social behaviour reduced, more visible policing in their communities, safer roads, stronger action against online and rural crime, and better support for victims.

“As I set next year’s budget, I want to hear directly from the people of Derbyshire. This is your police service, and your views are vital in helping shape the decisions we make.

“Every day, officers and staff work tirelessly to protect our communities, but they are operating in an increasingly challenging financial environment. The Acting Chief Constable has assured me that, with the right resources, Derbyshire Constabulary will be able to continue to keep communities safe and provide the best possible service for our residents.

“I would be grateful if people could take just a couple of minutes to complete the survey and tell me how much additional funding they would be prepared to contribute towards policing through their council tax. By working together, we can continue building a safer, stronger Derbyshire for everyone.”

Around 60 per cent of Derbyshire’s annual policing budget is funded through a central government grant, with the remaining 40 per cent raised locally through the policing element of council tax, known as the police precept.

Residents are being invited to give their views on an annual increase in the amount of precept paid (for a Band D property) in 2027/28. The options are:

  • £20-£25

  • £15-£20

  • £10-£15

  • Nothing

  • Don’t know

Properties in lower Bands would be subject to a lower increase, while those in Bands E-H would see a higher amount.

The provisional level of government funding for policing, known as the policing settlement, will be announced in December. The feedback from this consultation will help inform the Commissioner’s budget proposals ahead of setting the police precept for 2027/28.

The Acting Chief Constable has advised that, if appropriately resourced, the proposed budget will enable Derbyshire Constabulary to:

  • Maintain safer neighbourhood policing teams and deliver the service communities expect.

  • Make Derbyshire’s roads safer by tackling speeding and dangerous driving while continuing preventative work with motorcyclists.

  • Pursue offenders responsible for the most harmful crimes, including serious violence, sexual offences and violence against women and girls.

  • Prevent crime linked to substance misuse through long-term partnership working.

  • Improve services and support for victims of crime.

  • Bring more offenders to justice while reducing reoffending through effective interventions.

  • Invest in technology to improve public contact, including call handling, online reporting and digital engagement.

  • Ensure police buildings and facilities are fit for the future and located where communities need them most.

  • Strengthen specialist capabilities to tackle cybercrime, fraud and online offending through the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU).

  • Maintain high-quality policing services while responding to rising costs and financial pressures.

  • Meet new national policing requirements while continuing to deliver local services.

  • Maintain a modern, efficient and environmentally sustainable police fleet that supports frontline policing.

Residents can take part in the consultation by completing the online survey at: Commissioner Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts’ Budget Consultation 2027/28 – Fill in form

The consultation closes at midnight Thursday 7th January 2027.
