As the World Cup kicks off this evening (11 June), we know many of you will be watching England throughout their campaign – whether it’s at home, friends’ houses or events at local venues.
With many bars and pubs set to show the England matches, the first of which is next week (17 June), our officers and staff have been working hard to ensure that however you’re embracing the beautiful game, you can do so safely.
Our licensing team have been working with these venues to prepare for the tournament, during which we expect to see busier crowds, offering advice and support as part of the PubWatch scheme.
Officers will also be on hand in their local areas and increasing their high visibility patrols. They will also be working alongside Street Pastors and CCTV operators to identify any issues and combat these quickly.
Specialist teams and partners are also working together to support anyone experiencing domestic abuse and ensure support is available to them.
Chief Inspector Greg Hunt from Derbyshire Constabulary, said: “Tournaments like the World Cup are a great opportunity for football fans, and indeed casual fans, to really involve themselves and enjoy the best that football can offer.
“We have been working hard to ensure anyone heading out to watch the games throughout the tournament can enjoy doing so safely.
“Help is around should you need it, whether that’s from officers or bar staff, or specialist support services. We continuously work together to ensure events and screenings go ahead safely.
“Look after your friends, seek help if you need it, and walk away from any situations that may be escalating. Scores are settled on the pitch, not in pubs.”
A few handy tips if you’re heading out:
- Hollie Guard: The personal safety app can make it so a simple tap or shake of your phone can send a discreet alert to your emergency contacts if you feel that you are in danger. It will also automatically record video and audio evidence of what is happening around you.
- Ensure your phone is fully charged, and take a full portable charger, especially if you are relying on this to communicate with your friends or get home.
- Taxis can get busy during the tournament – you can book a reputable taxi in advance, or set a designated driver in your group who will stay sober.
- Our officers will also be conducting extra patrols – we hope you don’t need us, but if you do, they will be around. Speak to us if you see us.
