Derbyshire County Council closes several roads as a safety precaution ahead of snowfall

Derbyshire County Council’s highways authority has taken the precaution of closing several roads ahead of a forecast snowfall this evening, Thursday, January 8.

The Met Office has issued warnings for significant snowfall across the county from 5pm tonight, Thursday, January 8.

A council spokesperson stated: “We’ve decided to close several roads in advance of the snow, which will close at 6pm tonight.”

These affected roads include the following:

The A57 Snake Pass, from the junction with the A6013 to Glossop;

The A54/A537 Cat and Fiddle, from the junction with Leek Road, Buxton to the county boundary;

The A6024 Holme Moss, from the junction with the A628 to the county boundary;

The A53 Axe Edge, from the junction with Grin Low Road, Buxton to the county boundary;

The A5004, Long Hill, from the Horwich End traffic lights at Whaley Bridge to the A53 St John’s Road, Buxton.

The Via Gellia road will also be closed after Woodside Cafe after the junction with the road to Bonsall up to Grangemill – the junction with the B5056.

A council spokesperson added: “These are not decisions we’ve taken lightly and are based on public safety.

“We understand that National Highways will close the Woodhead Pass tonight, and it has been announced that there will be no trains through the Hope Valley from Manchester to Sheffield.

“We are advising people not to travel unless their journey is essential.”
