Chesterfield End Oldham’s Perfect Home Start with 2-1 Victory

Chesterfield ended Oldham Athletic’s 100% home start to the season with an impressive 2-1 victory at Boundary Park.

Paul Cook’s side took the lead before half-time through Lee Bonis, before Oldham hit back early in the second half.

The hosts were awarded a penalty in the 18th minute after Louie Marsh’s shot struck the hand of Gus Scott-Morriss inside the area.

Bonis stepped up from 12 yards, but Oldham goalkeeper Mat Hudson saved his spot-kick. The Chesterfield striker reacted quickest to the rebound, however, turning the ball home to give the Spireites the advantage.

Oldham responded five minutes after the interval when Favour Fawunmi headed home Jamie Robson’s cross from the left to make it 1-1.

But Chesterfield regained the lead almost immediately.

Just two minutes after Oldham’s equaliser, Dilan Markanday found the net from close range to restore the Spireites’ advantage.

Oldham had previously comfortably beaten Port Vale and Swindon in their opening home fixtures, but Chesterfield held firm to secure a 2-1 win and three valuable points.

The victory also marked Chesterfield’s first win in four games, as Cook’s side produced a determined performance to hand Oldham their first home defeat of the season.
