Chesterfield secured their place in the League Two play-offs with a crucial 2-1 victory over Swindon Town in a high-stakes clash at the County Ground.
The Spireites knew a win would seal a top-seven finish, and despite an early scare, they delivered when it mattered most. Dilan Markanday proved to be the hero, netting the decisive goal to keep Chesterfield’s promotion dream alive.
After a nervy start that saw Markanday miss an early opportunity, Chesterfield took control in the 19th minute. A fortunate break saw Armando Dobra’s mis-hit effort fall kindly for Lee Bonis, who reacted quickest to prod home the opener.
Chesterfield pushed for a second, with Ryan Stirk going close after being picked out in space, but he fired over the bar.
Swindon, who needed a win themselves, responded just before half-time as Aaron Drinan set up Ben Middlemas to level the scores, setting up a tense second half.
But Paul Cook’s side showed their quality after the break. A superb attacking move down the left saw Dobra burst into the box before squaring for Markanday, who finished from close range to restore Chesterfield’s lead just past the hour mark.
Goalkeeper Ryan Boot then played a vital role late on, producing an outstanding double save from point-blank range to deny Ollie Palmer and preserve the advantage.
The final whistle sparked celebrations as Chesterfield confirmed their play-off place, keeping their push for promotion firmly on track while ending Swindon’s hopes.
