National League North Report: Buxton win over Scarborough in Playoff hunt

Buxton strengthened their playoff push with a 2-0 win over Scarborough at The Silverlands.

Early on, Max Bardell created the first chance of the game, setting up Cian Coleman, but the midfielder fired wide.

Soon after, the home pressure continued as Luke Brennan laid the ball into Coleman’s path in space, forcing the keeper into a low diving save.

From the resulting corner, Brennan struck from the edge of the area, his effort deflecting off a Scarborough defender and calling the keeper into action once again.

Another corner caused problems as George Ward rose highest, although he couldn’t direct his header on target.

Scarborough’s first opportunity came through Jack Waldron, whose effort forced Joe Young into his first save of the match.

Continuing to knock on the door, Brennan delivered a ball into the area in the 26th minute that was met by Connor Douglas, who saw his header crash against the bar.

They eventually found the opener in the 32nd minute when Kieran Burton, overlapping down the flank, was brought down by former Buck Alex Brown, leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot. Brennan stepped up and calmly converted from 12 yards to make it 1-0.

Just four minutes later, Johnny Johnston nearly doubled the lead, cutting inside before curling an effort narrowly wide of the goal.

Moments later, Jake Hull could have been sent off for a last-man foul on Johnston, but the referee waved away Buxton’s appeals.

After the break, Scarborough started brightly, with William Thornton heading over from a cross in the opening stages.

Penalty appeals were dismissed when Alex Purver went down in the area, with the referee instead booking him for simulation.

Later on, Luca Colville fired a low, driven effort towards the bottom right corner, but it drifted wide of the target.

At the other end, Buxton doubled their advantage in the 66th minute, with Johnston finding the top right corner with a superb whipped finish.

Finally, Connor Kirby had the last chance of the game, but his shot was blocked behind by Hull inside the box.
