National League North Report: Buxton beat Worksop on Easter Monday

Buxton secured their sixth consecutive away win with a 2-1 victory over Worksop Town on Easter Monday.

Early on, Worksop dictated the play and controlled possession but struggled to create any clear-cut chances.

Eventually, their first opportunity came after 13 minutes when Aleksandrs Starcenko struck from distance, forcing Joe Young into a save.

Soon after, Buxton had an opening of their own as Will Flint rose highest from a Luke Brennan corner, but his header drifted narrowly wide.

Crucially, the visitors took the lead in the 23rd minute when Brennan beat his man and drove into the area. His cross was punched away by Lewis Forshaw but fell kindly to Connor Kirby, who powered a header into the net to make it 1-0.

Meanwhile, Buxton’s captain received the first yellow card of the game for a foul on former teammate Luke Hall in midfield.

Later, ex-Buck Oli Greaves flashed a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but no one was able to apply the finishing touch.

Shortly after the break, Johnny Johnston went down in the area but was instead shown a yellow card for simulation by the referee.

Again, Worksop threatened from a corner as Greaves aimed a header towards the top corner, only for Young to produce a strong save.

Then, in the 56th minute, Johnston sent Cian Coleman through on goal and the midfielder was brought down in the area, leaving the referee with a clear decision to award a penalty. Brennan stepped up, saw his effort saved, but reacted quickly to send the rebound back into the box where Max Bardell was on hand to double Buxton’s lead.

Searching for a route back into the game, Martin delivered a low cross to Greaves, whose flick drifted wide due to the spin on the ball.

Later on, a long ball forward from Young found Brennan, who looked to add a third but fired his effort high and wide.

Finally, in added time, substitute Martin pulled a goal back for the hosts as he met a long throw from Szhem Whyte-Hall with a header to make it 2-1.
