New Bridge Installed in Matlock as Part of River Derwent Upgrade

A major engineering project has taken place in Matlock, with a 60-tonne bridge successfully installed over the River Derwent.

Water company Severn Trent used a large crane to lift the 36.6-metre structure into place, linking access to the town’s sewage treatment works. The complex operation took around two hours to complete, following three years of planning.

The new bridge forms part of a wider upgrade to the treatment works, aimed at increasing capacity and improving the health of the River Derwent. The improvements are expected to help reduce sewage spills and lower phosphate levels in the water.

The previous bridge, which had been in place for decades, had weight restrictions and needed replacing to support the latest investment in the site.

Severn Trent says it worked closely with local councillors throughout the project to minimise disruption and protect the surrounding environment.

As part of its ongoing work in the area, the company will host a series of community events in Matlock from 13 April. The events will give residents the chance to share feedback and learn more about the project, alongside a photography exhibition celebrating the area’s water heritage.

The upgrade is part of wider efforts to improve infrastructure and protect waterways across Derbyshire.
