New Council Plan Sets Direction for Derbyshire Until 2029

A new council plan outlining priorities for Derbyshire over the next three years has officially been launched.

The strategy, which runs until 2029, sets out a shift in direction with a focus on delivering core services, reducing bureaucracy and improving efficiency across the county.

Approved earlier this year, the plan aims to provide a clearer and more straightforward approach to how services are delivered, while responding to rising demand and increasing financial pressures.

Key priorities include improving roads and tackling potholes, strengthening support for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), boosting the local economy and helping residents lead healthier lives.

The council has also highlighted plans to streamline its operations, manage finances carefully and work more closely with partners, including the East Midlands Combined County Authority.

There is a particular emphasis on early intervention and prevention in children’s services, alongside efforts to increase school capacity and improve the speed of assessments for SEND support.

Investment in infrastructure, including road maintenance and drainage, is also a major focus, following ongoing concerns from residents.

The plan also outlines a more practical approach to environmental issues, supporting energy security and affordable solutions, while aiming to reduce waste and protect Derbyshire’s natural environment.

Council leaders say the plan has been shaped by feedback from residents and is designed to ensure public money is spent effectively on the services people rely on most.

The strategy comes into effect from April 2026 and will remain in place until 2029, although future local government changes could see it replaced earlier.
