National League North Report: Buxton’s fine form away continues with win over Leamington

Buxton continued their fine form on the road with a 1-0 win over Leamington, with an early goal being the difference.

The first opening arrived inside three minutes when Johnny Johnston drove at the near post and forced the goalkeeper into a sharp save.

Sustained pressure followed through a succession of corners, with Kieran Burton rising highest but seeing his header blocked behind as Leamington struggled to clear their lines.

Connor Douglas was next to threaten, striking goalwards only for Eric Yahaya to clear off the line and prevent what looked a certain opener.

The breakthrough did come in the eighth minute. Johnston created space cleverly inside the area before laying the ball into the path of Luke Brennan, who fired home confidently to give Buxton a deserved lead.

Leamington’s first real sight of goal came when Ethan Williams reacted to a bouncing ball in the box, but George Ward threw himself in front of the effort to preserve the advantage.

A set-piece then offered the hosts encouragement as Connor Kirby stepped up with a free-kick that was palmed away by Eddie Brearey in goal.

Buxton thought they had doubled their lead five minutes before the break when Johnston surged from his own half and finished, only for the flag to be raised for offside. His protests earned him a booking.

Moments later, Johnston went close again, cutting in from a tight angle and forcing the keeper to tip his driven effort behind.

Early in the second half, Williams tested Young with a low strike that required a smart save as Leamington searched for a response.

Midway through the half, Brennan nearly added a second when he cut inside in the 75th minute and curled an effort just over the crossbar.

The home side then appealed strongly for a penalty after a shot appeared to strike a Buxton defender in the box, but the referee waved play on.

From that decision, Johnston broke quickly upfield and attempted to catch the defence out, though he was unable to hit the target.

Late drama almost unfolded when Dan Meredith produced a firm tackle on Coleman in the closing stages, but only a yellow card was shown as Buxton held on to secure the three points.
