National League North Report: Former Buck strikes late as Chester beat ten man Buxton

Chester left it late to claim a 1-0 win over Buxton, who had been down to ten men since the early stages.

Following an altercation with Tom Davies, former Chester player Kurt Willoughby saw the visitors reduced in numbers after he kicked out at Davies.

Meanwhile, early treatment was required when Sammy Robinson went down and, after a three minute stoppage, Robinson returned to the pitch with strapping on his head.

Pressing to make the extra man count, Dylan Mottley-Henry stabbed a shot wide of the post after being played through by Tom Peers.

Later, Chester were forced into a change when Peers picked up an injury and was replaced by Pat Jones in the 18th minute.

Buxton’s first opening came down the right as Johnny Johnston burst forward with pace before crossing for Luke Brennan, whose effort failed to hit the target.

Concern grew for the Seals in the 27th minute when Zac Gilsenan was involved in two separate incidents with Davies, first receiving a booking for obstruction and then pulling the midfielder back moments later, with appeals from Buxton waved away by the referee.

Soon after, Mottley-Henry was shown a yellow card for a strong challenge on Kieran Burton.

Just before the break, loan signing Will Flint was also booked for fouling Mottley-Henry.

After the restart, Iwan Murray produced the first chance of the second half, aiming for the top corner from distance but sending his effort narrowly wide.

Minutes later, in the 54th minute, Mottley-Henry climbed highest to meet a header that drifted over the crossbar.

Attempting to freshen things up on the hour, Buxton made a double substitution as Cian Coleman and Connor Douglas replaced Gilsenan and Johnston.

Shortly afterwards, Connor Kirby tried to launch a quick counterattack but was pulled back by substitute Connor Woods, who was duly booked.

Finally, with the Seals pushing forward, they broke through in the 85th minute as Mottley-Henry headed home from a corner to secure a 1-0 win at the Deva Stadium.
