National League North Preview: Buxton face Peterborough Sports under the lights

UP NEXT:

Buxton are back under the lights as they face Peterborough Sports on Tuesday 10th February with a 7:45pm kickoff.

The Bucks

On Saturday Buxton’s game against Alfreton was called off due to a waterlogged pitch at North Street.

In their most recent outing last weekend, Buxton lost 2-1 to Spennymoor Town with Kirby scoring The Bucks’ only goal.

Reflecting on the Spennymoor game, manager John McGrath said:

“I think at halftime, going in one-nil up, we missed some chances in that first half.

We played really well as a whole, but if you don’t take your chances and they were clear-cut chances, then you always risk the counterattack or long throw or corner kick, which was the undoing of us really, the set piece.

But we should defend them better. We shouldn’t give them away in the first place.

It’s a hard one to take because of the amount of chances we created, but as a whole, I thought we were excellent.”

This week Buxton has signed Will Flint on loan from Doncaster until the end of the season. A versatile player Flint can play in both midfield and defence.

Opposition facts

Peterborough Sports have Phil Brown as manager, who took over in September 2025.  He played over 500 times in the football league as a player for Hartlepool, Halifax, Bolton and Blackpool. His first role as a manager was as caretaker, during which he won four out of five games in 1999. He then had six years as an assistant before managing Derby County and went on to manage Hull City, Preston North End, Southend, Swindon, Barrow and Kidderminster.

The club are based in Cambridgeshire and was founded in 1908 as Brotherhood Engineering Works. They changed their name in 2001 to Peterborough Sports.

Nicknamed The Turbines, they play their home matches at PIMS Park which holds 2300.

Historically, their best FA Cup run saw them reach the fourth qualifying round which they have done three times and most recently got to in the 2024-25 season.

In the FA Trophy, they reached the quarter finals in their best-ever run in the 2023-24 season.

In 2022 they reached the National League North after winning the NPL Premier Division playoffs beating Colville 2-0 in the final.

The club finished 12th in the league last season, ending the campaign on 63 points.

Looking at recent form, Peterborough sit 11th across the last ten games, with Buxton in 9th.

Last time out, they drew against Curzon Ashton 1-1 with  Max Booth scoring the Turbines’ goal.

In the away form guide, they are 21st with 10 points from their 14 games on the road.

Peterborough are in 19th place in the league after 30 games and have 32 points.

One to Watch: Elliott Whitehouse

Whitehouse joined the club at the beginning of the season on loan from Macclesfield and captained them in their last game.

He has made over 300 appearances in both the National League and League Two whilst playing at Grimsby Town, Forest Green Rovers, Chester and Scunthorpe United.

When at Forest Green Rovers he won League Two and he won the National League with Lincoln as well as the EFL Trophy.

The midfielder is 5ft 11 and started his career in the Sheffield United academy.

Last time they faced

Connor Kirby scored a late free-kick to seal a 2-1 win when the sides met earlier on in the season after Louis Stephenson got an equaliser for The Bucks.

It was a 3-1 defeat for Buxton last time they met at The Silverlands with Tommy Elliott getting the only Bucks goal.
