Newport County 2–1 Chesterfield: Late Markanday strike not enough for Spireites
Chesterfield slipped to a narrow 2–1 defeat away at Newport County in League Two, despite a late rally that saw Dilan Markanday pull a goal back in the closing stages.
After a goalless first half, the game came to life shortly after the break. Newport opened the scoring on 50 minutes when Harrison Biggins fired home a right-footed shot following a corner from Anthony Glennon to give the hosts the advantage.
The Welsh side doubled their lead on 63 minutes, with Michael Spellman producing a stunning left-footed effort from outside the box after a headed assist from Matt Smith, putting Chesterfield under real pressure.
Paul Cook’s side continued to battle and were rewarded late on, as Dilan Markanday struck on 85 minutes with a composed left-footed finish to reduce the deficit and set up a tense finale.
Chesterfield pushed for an equaliser in the closing minutes, but Newport held firm to secure all three points.
The Spireites will now look to bounce back quickly as their League Two campaign continues.
