Storm Claudia causing flooding across Derbyshire

An amber rain warning has been declared by the Met Office across the East Midlands.

There are 25 flood alerts currently in place across the region, and one flood warning, which is more severe.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has urged the public to take extra precautions as a result of Storm Claudia, which has brought heavy rain and winds to England and Wales.

Authorities have warned that flooding, transport disruption, and dangerous driving conditions are likely.

The amber weather warning for the East Midlands lasts until 23:59 GMT on Friday, and becomes a yellow warning until 06:00 on Saturday.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service has advised the following:

  • Communities are asked to sign up to flood alerts so they can prepare.

  • Drivers are asked to drive to the road conditions, taking particular care due to surface water.

  • Do not ignore Road Closed signs.

  • Drive to the conditions – watch your speed.

  • Be aware of stopping distances.

  • Do not drive through flood water.

  • Just 60cm of standing water will float a car.

  • Just 30cm of flowing water could be enough to move/float a car.

  • Do not attempt to drive through fords which are in flood.

  • Walkers, runners and dog walkers: Please be aware of rising river levels and fast-flowing water.

  • Keep away from the water’s edge.

  • Keep dogs on leads when near open water.

  • Never enter the water to rescue anyone, or any animal that may be in trouble in water. Call 999 immediately.

It’s been a busy evening with Storm Claudia continuing to cause issues across Derbyshire with lots of surface water flooding as heavy rain continues to fall.

Derbyshire County Council have closed roads due to flooding at:

  • Four Lane Ends, Darley Bridge
  • The A617 approach to Chesterfield at Hornsbridge.
  • Tom Lane in Duckmanton

The Via Gellia, A5012, remains closed as we have concerns about the effect of high winds and levels of rain on trees along this section.

Motorists travelling on the A6 at Darley Dale, along the stretch near Haddon Hall between Bakewell and Rowsley, Beeley and at Ashford-in-the-Water are urged to drive with extreme caution.

Residents living at Tapton Terrace in Chesterfield are being given safety advice and information by partner agencies on the ground.

Surface water is likely to be causing problems on many other roads across the county so drivers are urged to make essential journeys only but if they have to travel are urged to drive to the conditions, exercise extreme caution and never drive through flood water.

The council say they will continue to monitor weather conditions and respond where necessary, working in partnership with all the relevant organisations. It is hoped the rain will begin to ease towards the morning and we will be reviewing road closures and the general road conditions then.

Meanwhile, our crews have been out and about clearing several fallen trees which had blocked roads. If you see an obstruction in the road report it using the link below.

Please heed the following advice:

  • Roads in Derbyshire could be affected by surface water flooding so please drive to the conditions, slow down and leave room between you and the car in front of you
  • Never drive or walk into floodwater, even if it appears shallow – it could endanger your life. Just 30cm of fast-flowing floodwater can be enough to move your car.
  • Look out for vulnerable neighbours
  • Keep away from river banks and pathways close to rivers. The paths may have become unstable and slippery.
  • Never enter the water to rescue anyone, or an animal in difficulty in the water. Call 999 immediately and tell them to float on their back
  • Keep dogs on leads close to water
  • Any issues on the roads, such as trees down or flooding can be reported to the county council online: Report a road fault or ask about a road issue – Derbyshire County Council
  • Households and businesses in known flooding areas are encouraged to take steps to protect their properties and sign up for flood warnings and alerts
  • Waves created by vehicles in flooded areas cause more issues for homes and businesses at the side of them so please take care.
  • To report flooding visit: Drainage, flooding and ironwork – Issue – Section 1 – Self
