Buxton progress further in the FA Cup

Report by North Derbyshire Radio’s Elliot Steadman

Buxton progressed through to the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup after a 3-2 win over Marine, a tie that featured four penalties and a late winner.

Terry Bondo had the first chance of the game, beating Deniche Hill before firing into the side netting.

At the other end Tate Campbell forced Fraser Barnsley into a quick save following a driving run into the box.

It was Buxton who found the breakthrough in the 15th minute when Tai Sodje burst through with speed and finished confidently despite pressure from the Marine defence.

Luke Brennan then came in from out wide and fired narrowly off target from the edge of the area, before turning creator with a pinpoint cross that Sodje headed onto the roof of the net.

The first of the penalties arrived on the hour mark when Will Trueman was adjudged to have brought down Finley Sinclair-Smith. Ash Hunter stepped up and levelled the scores.

Just six minutes later the referee pointed to the spot again, this time for a handball against Connor Kirby, but Hunter was denied by Paul Cooper’s superb stop with his foot.

A third penalty in quick succession followed when George Ward handled in the area, and Hunter converted at the second attempt to put Marine 2-1 up.

Buxton struck back in the 77th minute, Max Bardell surging down the right before cutting the ball across for Campbell to slot home.

And the Bucks sealed progression late on when Ryan McLean’s quick footwork earned a fourth spot-kick of the afternoon, Sodje stepping up to dispatch his second of the game and secure the win.
