Seated exercise classes bring boost to Platform residents in Derbyshire

Residents at two retirement living schemes in Derbyshire will benefit from the positive impact of gentle exercise, thanks to funding from Platform Housing Group’s Community Chest.

Customers at Town Head in Ashbourne and Hoyle Court in Bakewell applied to Platform’s Community Chest, a funding pot for Platform customers and local charities, clubs and other not-for-profit organisations for any projects directly benefitting Platform customers; all applications are assessed against specific eligibility criteria by customers who sit on its Customer Voice Panel.

Both have been awarded grants to support regular seated exercise sessions following the success of initial classes arranged earlier this year. The sessions aim to improve physical and mental wellbeing tackling social isolation for residents.

Some of the group at Town Head – a small retirement scheme of 20 flats and bungalows – have mobility issues and some are wheelchair users; after four introductory sessions arranged by Platform, residents were keen to continue.

At Hoyle Court, the funds awarded will cover the cost of 40 sessions throughout the year. Nine residents took part in the initial trial with more expected to join as word spreads.

Resident Glyn Devanny said: “It’s been brilliant to have something everyone can take part in. The classes are making a real difference, not just to our health but also by helping neighbours get to know each other.”

Both groups highlighted the positive effects of the sessions, from better mobility and reduced anxiety, to forming new friendships and learning techniques to improve daily life.

Tracey Silk, Community Engagement Manager at Platform Housing Group said: “These small retirement living spaces can sometimes miss out on opportunities like this so I’m delighted they’ve had the chance to get involved. The enthusiasm from residents has been fantastic and it’s clear the sessions are having a meaningful impact.”

Platform’s Community Chest is a fund available to help support projects that improve the lives of its customers and strengthen communities. It is open to both formal and informal groups connected to Platform’s neighbourhoods.
