More East Midlands Railway services to return from October

East Midlands Railway (EMR) is increasing services on its Intercity network following improvements to the reliability of its new Aurora trains.

The operator reduced its Intercity timetable to 87% in July after experiencing problems with its new Class 810 trains, built by Hitachi Rail.

EMR increased services to 92% from 1 September and says it now has greater confidence in raising the timetable to 96% from 19 October.

The Intercity network connects London St Pancras with destinations including Sheffield, Chesterfield, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester and Lincoln.

More services between Sheffield, Chesterfield and London

Passengers travelling between Sheffield, Chesterfield and London will see more services restored, including the return of the 09:00 departure from Sheffield.

EMR also says additional weekend services, along with earlier and later journeys, will be introduced.

Nottingham will also see a number of services return, including the 13:50 and 18:10 trains to London, as well as the 11:35, 16:05 and 20:35 services back to the East Midlands.

EMR interim managing director Neil Grabham said the increase would give passengers “greater choice and flexibility” when travelling to and from London.

The railway operator said it has been working with Hitachi Rail, the Department for Transport and other industry partners to improve fleet reliability and ensure the additional services can operate safely and consistently.

Grabham said there was still more work to do to restore the full timetable, adding that the company remained focused on addressing the remaining fleet challenges.

He also thanked passengers and frontline staff for their patience and understanding during the timetable reductions.
