Chesterfield suffered a 2-1 defeat at Cheltenham Town as the hosts continued their impressive start to the season.

Charlie McCann put the Robins ahead in the 17th minute with his seventh goal of the campaign.

Jordan Shipley’s forward pass was played into McCann’s path by Ryan Broom, and he made no mistake, finding the bottom-right corner beyond Ryan Boot.

The Spireites came close to an equaliser, with Lee Bonis hitting the woodwork before Joel Randall saw his effort deflected onto the roof of the net.

Cheltenham doubled their advantage shortly before half-time.

McCann picked out Jonathan Tomkinson, who nodded the ball down for Andi Weimann to fire home his fourth goal in four games.

Chesterfield pushed for a way back into the contest, with Cheltenham goalkeeper Stanway producing an excellent save to deny Bonis before the break.

The visitors did get their reward four minutes into the second half.

Remeao Hutton played the ball to Randall, whose effort was blocked, but the rebound fell to Louie Marsh, who fired home to reduce the deficit.

Chesterfield continued to press for an equaliser, with Liam Mandeville shooting narrowly wide in the 84th minute.

However, Cheltenham held on to secure all three points and leave the Spireites empty-handed.
