A 2-1 victory over Merthyr Town made it two wins for Buxton over the Bank Holiday weekend.
The Bucks started brightly, with Owen Devonport’s flick from a long throw finding Kieran Burton, although the defender couldn’t generate enough power behind his header as it went straight into the goalkeeper’s hands.
Moments later, Kian Scales won the ball back in midfield and sent Johnny Johnston away, but his ball across the face of goal couldn’t be met by a Buxton shirt.
At the other end, Merthyr’s first opportunity fell to Kane Simpson, whose effort bent wide of the post as he looked for the far corner. The forward then went again shortly afterwards, striking his next effort hard and over Logan Stretch’s bar.
Buxton took the lead in the 17th minute as Burton’s persistence paid off when he found Devonport, before a quick passing move involving Ashton Mee saw the ball played through to Tony Weston, who powered his finish into the far corner.
However, Merthyr almost immediately found an opportunity to restore parity after a mix-up at the back saw Buxton come under pressure, although The Bucks’ defence eventually managed to clear the danger.
Seven minutes later, the visitors broke forward with pace, with Simpson smashing a shot against the crossbar from a tight angle before Buxton managed to deal with the rebound.
As pressure continued to build, Merthyr forced low blocked efforts from both Aneurin Livermore and Watts, before Livermore went again, this time clipping the top of the crossbar.
From a corner, Merthyr thought they had found an equaliser when Simpson turned the ball in at the back post, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul inside the area.
Eventually, the visitors’ pressure paid off just before half-time when a deflected cross fell to Jay Foulston, who smashed the ball home to make it 1-1.
After the restart, Merthyr once again began on the front foot, with Livermore’s effort being tipped over the crossbar by Stretch.
Shortly afterwards, a ball into the area caused further problems as Lee Lucas’ delivery found the head of the onrushing Watts, but his header flew over the bar.
Buxton’s first opening of the second half came through Devonport, who kept the ball in play and beat his man before seeing his effort from a tight angle miss the target.
Moments later, Jack Evans tried his luck from distance, with his effort curling just past the post.
Lucas then stepped up for a free-kick and struck it with power, forcing Stretch into another save.
Despite Merthyr’s pressure, it was Buxton who regained the lead as Will Trueman picked up the ball on the edge of the box following a corner, with a deflection taking his effort into the net to make it 2-1.
The Bucks almost secured the result when Josh Pescatore’s ball into the area was nearly met by Tuntulwana, although the referee blew for a foul on the goalkeeper.
Late on, Buxton thought they had added a third when the ball found the net, but the effort was ruled out for an offside against Guilherme Siqueira in the build-up.
