Dronfield Town recorded a derby day success and registered back-to-back victories with a 3-2 win over Swallownest FC. A fine advert for United Counties League football was astonishingly goal-less at half time but sprung into life with five in the second half. George Walker put Swall ahead from the spot on 51 minutes before Dronfield equalised through Aston Thompson on 57 minutes. Town’s Max Rhodes gave the hosts the lead with a penalty seven minutes later and Dronfield all but sealed the win when Luke Walker converted a delightful move on 85 minutes. Charlie Baird was given the freedom to pull one back in injury time but it was Dronfield who took the three points and climbed to fifth in the table at this early stage of the campaign.

The game was end-to-end from the off but amazingly, no goals came in a pulsating first half. George Walker’s 20 yard half volley signalled the visitors intent after only 3 minutes, being tipped away by Lewis Naylor. Town hit back sixty seconds later when Matty Ord’s right footed effort by blocked by Swallownest stopper Ollie Sykes.

The five minute mark saw Dronfield youngster Callum Martin, given his first start of the season, free in the left channel and it took the feet of Sykes to save a certain goal.

Another Town debutant, Harrison Ireland, played a lovely through ball on 14 minutes that found Aston Thompson but the central defender was unable to get as much connection on his shot as he would have liked.

Swallownest suffered the blow of Ben Billson being withdrawn through injury with only 16 minutes elapsed but their rejigged side went close through Tom Bedford on the half hour mark.

There was no let up in the action as the impressive Martin produced a right footed curler from the edge of the box that was parried away to his left by Sykes and the half closed with another Bedford attempt that was narrowly wide.

The dearth of goals was soon rectified in an equally as enthralling second 45 minutes.

Swallownest took the lead six minutes after the resumption. A handball decision saw the match referee pointing to the penalty spot. George Walker placed the penalty to Naylor’s left hand side and the visitors were a goal to the good.

The lead lasted six minutes. A foul by Harrison Case on the influential Matty Ord saw him pick up a yellow card and Dronfield receive a free kick out on the right flank. Connor Chapell’s accurate delivery found the head of Aston Thompson at the far post and Town were back on level terms.

Dronfield took the lead on 64 minutes. Callum Martin’s lively performance saw him impeded inside the area and although his tumble took place in slow motion, again the ref pointed to the spot. Max Rhodes despatched the spot kick with aplomb and the hosts were now ahead by 2-1.

Swallownest suffered a further blow on 75 minutes. Spencer Sheppard collected his second yellow card and was sent from the field to leave the visitors down to ten men. Despite this, substitute Ben Thornton went close with a half volley with ten minutes to play.

Dronfield all but sealed the points on 85 minutes. A delightful move saw Max Rhodes advance up the right wing. He found Alex Appleyard, who squared for Luke Walker to finish at close range and give the North Derbyshire side a seemingly unassailable 3-1 advantage.

Credit to Swallownest, they persisted right into added time and got a consolation three minutes in. Charlie Baird was afforded too much time by the Town defence and was able to turn and shoot unchallenged to make it 3-2.

The win sees Dronfield climb to fifth place at this early stage of the season ahead of a tough-looking fixture on Saturday. The men from S18 head to Stapleford Town; a side who finished third last season and who inflicted a pair of comfortable defeats on the Derbyshire outfit in 2025-26.
