Peak District team offer advice on making pubs more viable

One of the team behind a Peak District pub that was reborn as a community space has been telling North Derbyshire Radio the government could be doing more to make village pubs viable.

Jonathan Lindley, chair of the board at The Angler’s Rest in Bamford says things are tough in the pub trade right now, due to the cost of living limiting people’s spending power.

Not far from Ladybower Reservoir, the pub and its associated Post Office and Rest Cafe have been run by a team of locals since 2013.

More widely, the British Beer and Pub Association says East Midlands residents raising a Christmas pint in pubs and at home should enjoy the taste of supporting 67,000 local jobs, which pay £894 million in wages and contribute £1.5 billion to the economy.

It wants a cut in the tax on beer in the government’s next Budget and a pledge to bring beer duty down to the European average over the course of the next Parliament. It is also calling for reformed business rates and a lower VAT rate for pubs.

Mr Lindley spoke to North Derbyshire Radio’s Senior News Editor Matt Hewitt, and began by describing what visitors to his pub would see as they came through the doors.
