£1.5m is set to be invested into Eckington Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre, slashing its carbon emissions by 66%, making it the greenest leisure centre in the area.

The project supports the council’s efforts to decarbonise energy sources in public buildings to achieve net zero by 2030. This includes the use of solar panel technology, replacing gas powered boilers with air source heat pumps and a new air handling system that will improve air quality and will increase the temperatures in the pool hall for customers in the building.

The swimming pool at the centre will be closed for approximately 16 weeks whilst the works are completed. Other areas of the centre remain open and unaffected.

Cllr Jeremy Kenyon, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Transformation and Climate Change at North East Derbyshire District Council, said: “We continue to invest in our leisure centres and our futures by reducing carbon emissions and providing excellent quality facilities for our communities to enjoy”.

“The centre remains open for business with only the pool being closed for refurbishment and any memberships can also be used at our other leisure centres in Dronfield and Clay Cross”.
