Derbyshire Dales celebrates the Jubilee

Derbyshire Dales District Council has issued grants to 74 towns and villages across the Dales to help finance celebrations of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee over the coming long bank holiday weekend.

Street parties, picnics and afternoon teas, barbecues, bands and dancers will help the celebrations to ring out in Dales communities, from Abney, Alkmonton and Ashford in the Water to Winster, Wirksworth and Youlgrave.

In February this year District councillors resolved unanimously to set aside a total of £38,000 in a one-off grant scheme for local town and parish councils to apply for financial support to celebrate the Queen’s historic 70-year reign. Towns could apply for up to £1,000, parishes up to £500 and parish meetings up to £250.

Council Leader Councillor Garry Purdy said:
“As a District Council we agreed that rather than seeking to adopt a single unifying event of celebration for all communities, our local town and parish councils would be best placed to determine an appropriate form of celebration in their area.
“I’m delighted at the way our officers have gone to work on this to engage the vast majority of local councils and parish meetings to ensure Derbyshire Dales marks Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in great style right across the district.”
There’s an incredible range of celebratory events. The bigger ones include a family fun day with local bands and fireworks in Ashbourne’s Memorial Gardens, three days of events in Darley Dale’s Whitworth Park and a two-day market with entertainment galore in Matlock’s Hall Leys Park.

Other communities such as Ashford in the Water are having a picnic on the playfield and commemorative tree planting. Jubilee mugs for children and over 70s are part of the celebrations in Beeley, while Brassington has opted to create a wildflower and shrub area on the village green.

In Great Longstone villagers are having a 1950s’ themed picnic, while in Hartington there will be four days of events, including a concert, lighting of a beacon, family picnic and sports day.

Osmaston and Yeldersley have opted for a vintage car rally and party, Sudbury has an outdoor cinema and Winster’s street party will include a treasure hunt, music and Morris dancers.

The District Council’s licensing team have also been working hard to organise several road closures requested by local streets and communities to enable Jubilee events to take place.
