Derbyshire County Council: Council’s ambitious net zero plan will have ripple effect throughout county.

County chiefs hope a new procurement policy aimed at reducing the council’s carbon footprint will have a ripple effect down to its suppliers.

Derbyshire County Council’s Sustainable Procurement Policy outlines how it plans to adapt its processes and guidance to promote sustainability, in line with the wider Climate Change Strategy: Achieving Net Zero, that aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2032.

It sets out key focus areas to assist officers and stakeholders, including resilience and adaptation to climate change, waste management and supporting small and local businesses.

In a Cabinet meeting on Thursday (June 16), Leader Councillor Barry Lewis said he hoped the policy would ‘help drive innovations’ in the council’s supply chain.

Councillor Tony King added: “When we talk about procurement, people tend to talk about value for money, saving money etc but one very important aspect is we have the ability to influence our supply chain and get our supply chain to supply to certain conditions and standards.”

He continued: “The sustainable procurement policy will influence our supply chain and in turn benefit our residents.”

Members voted in favour of the procurement policy.
