Buxton outdoor centre celebrates 70th birthday.

Buxton’s White Hall Outdoor Centre is getting ready to celebrate its 70th birthday with a fun-packed day for all the family to enjoy.

The family activity fun day will be held on Saturday 18 September 2021, 10am until 4pm and will include activities such as zip wires, bush craft, pond dipping and a bouncy castle. There will also be food available and various stalls from local businesses.

The centre, which opened in 1951, is managed by our outdoor education service and was the first in the country to be opened by a local authority and is recognised as a leading influence in the development of outdoor education in the UK and across the world.

More than a million people have taken part in residential, day and outreach courses enjoying rock climbing, caving, mountain biking and canoeing in the surrounding Peak District as well as using its onsite climbing wall, ropes course and zip wire facilities.

Our Cabinet Member for Education Councillor Alex Dale said:

“There is only one way to celebrate White Hall’s 70th birthday and that’s with a fun-packed family day out.

“Many generations have enjoyed activities at the centre since it opened in 1951 making it a very special place in Derbyshire where great memories and lifelong friendships are made.

“A visit to White Hall is often a young person’s first experience of being away from home and this can be a significant time to develop, grow and gain confidence. The centre has also expanded its facilities to welcome team-building days, group activities and corporate and private events which are proving extremely popular.”

Visitors to the event will also be introduced to the centre’s new charity, The Friends of White Hall Centre.

Tickets are limited so booking early is advised. Find out more and book tickets for the White Hall activity day.

Only cash will be accepted on the day of the event. If paying on the day, a child’s activity pass is £15. Activities are for ages 5 to 17-year-olds and White Hall activity consent forms must be filled in prior to arrival.

A free shuttle bus will be in operation from Buxton and Chapel-en-le-Frith to White Hall.
