Work needed to complete the construction of a new road linking Woodville and Swadlincote resumed this week in a push to get the route open before Christmas.
We stepped in as principal contractor to co-ordinate the works after the previous contractor, North Midland Construction, went into administration bringing the project to a halt in early October.
Firms that worked on the project previously under sub-contract to North Midland Construction have been re-appointed to finish the job. Pavement surfacing and work to prepare the road ready for surfacing has already begun with work to lay the road surface starting from Tuesday (30 November 2021).
Once the new road surface is in place, road markings can be added and fencing installed along the new road. Other preparations will be made to allow landscaping to take place after Christmas once the road is open.
Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Environment, Councillor Carolyn Renwick said:
“We’re pleased that work is about to resume following weeks of financial and legal processes that had to be overcome as part of the previous contactor’s administration process.
“I’d like to thank local people and businesses for their patience while we have put all the necessary measures in place to get this project back up-and-running following the unexpected delay.
“I know how keen people are to see this long-awaited road opened, but I’d urge them to bear with us for just a few weeks more and keep away while we complete the remaining work.”
The project has been designed to unlock land for redevelopment alongside the route, opening up opportunities for new housing and business development.
Measuring almost a mile in length, the single-carriageway road will also ease congestion on existing roads in the area, particularly the Clock Island in Woodville where the A511 joins the A514.
The road is being funded jointly by us, contributing £7 million, and D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, which earmarked £6.4 million from its Local Growth Fund.
